Union Representation for Non-Instructional Employees

Know the Facts: In 2023, SB 256 set the stage by banning payroll deductions and demanding 60% membership, aiming to make it harder for non-instructional employees to secure union rights. But together, we fought back and protected our union. Now, they’ve gone further with SB 1296—the "Union Killer" bill. These aren't just updates to labor law; they are a coordinated strategy to silence you so politicians can cut the taxes of their wealthy friends: Rigging the Vote: Imagine an election for Governor where if you didn't show up to vote, your "non-vote" automatically counted for the incumbent. That is what SB 1296 does to our union. By counting every person who doesn't vote as a "No," they are rigging the game because they couldn’t win it by playing by the rules. Draining Our Resources: By forcing the union to reimburse the state for every minute spent defending a worker or negotiating a raise, they are trying to bankrupt us so we can’t afford to fight for you. The "Blank Page" Threat: If these bills succeed in decertifying our union, your contract vanishes. The very next day, your employer could legally lower your hourly rate, increase your healthcare premiums, or fire you for no reason at all. Without a union, you are an "at-will" employee with no voice and no backup.
